Birthstone Gifts for Men: A Christmas Guide by Month and Zodiac Sign

Picking his Christmas gift by birthstone sounds like a shortcut. Then you pull up the list: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, pearl. Faceted gems, mostly, set in rings and pendants and priced to match.

If he's more of a bracelet man than a ring man, there's a better route. Use his birth month or zodiac sign as a color starting point, then pick a natural stone he'll still be wearing on an ordinary Tuesday in March. Every month and every sign gets a concrete pick below.

Birthstones, briefly (and where we draw the line)

The list most jewelers use goes back to 1912, when American jewelers agreed on a standard set of stones per month. It's been revised since. The modern picks are still mostly precious gems, and not one of the twelve months lands on tiger eye, sodalite or onyx.

Two months do have a real historical tie to stones we work with. The 1912 list put lapis lazuli beside turquoise for December, and some older European lists placed onyx under July. Everywhere else we're matching on color. We'll say which is which as we go.

Is that a weaker gift? Not really. A man looks at his wrist and sees blue. He doesn't see "September." The color carries the thought, and the stone is what survives a year of keyboards, car doors and coat cuffs.

Birthstone gifts for men, by birth month

January

Garnet, a deep wine-dark red. Cherry Creek jasper gets close in red and brown, minus the sparkle.

February

Amethyst, so purple. We don't make a purple stone, simple as that. Look at what he already wears instead, which for most men means black, which means matte onyx.

March

March has two: aquamarine and bloodstone. Bloodstone is dark green flecked with red, and dragon's blood jasper looks much the same on a wrist. For aquamarine, sodalite. A lot darker, same blue family.

April

Diamond. Nothing in a bead line stands in for a diamond, and a fake one rarely works on a man's wrist anyway. A clean steel bracelet carries the same cool, colorless note.

May

May: emerald. Kambaba jasper, deep green with darker spots.

June

Pearl or moonstone. Labradorite belongs to the same mineral family as moonstone, and under a desk lamp it throws a similar shifting sheen, only darker and moodier. Gray-green, until he moves his hand.

July

July is ruby, which points to red jasper. Onyx is the other option, and the one with history on its side: older lists did put it under July.

August

August is crowded. Peridot, spinel and sardonyx all claim it. Sardonyx is banded chalcedony, and picture jasper, with its layered browns and tans, is the nearest look. Different stone, though, and we won't pretend otherwise.

September

Sapphire, and the easiest month on the list. Lapis lazuli, sodalite and blue tiger eye all sit in deep blue and look right next to a steel watch.

October

Opal or tourmaline, both known for color play. Labradorite's flash comes closest. Or sidestep the single-stone question with a mixed bracelet like the Knox Spectrum.

November

Topaz or citrine, golden yellow, and tiger eye is the obvious match: turn his wrist toward a window and the honey-to-dark-gold bands shift with it. For something quieter, bronzite.

December

Turquoise, tanzanite or zircon. Our pick is lapis lazuli, which shared December with turquoise on the 1912 list. Sodalite if he'd rather skip the gold-colored flecks.

Natural stone varies bead to bead, so the bracelet that arrives won't be an exact copy of the photo. With jasper, that's half the appeal.

Zodiac gifts for men: choose by element, not by "his stone"

Crystal guides don't agree on which stone belongs to which sign. One shop pairs Sagittarius with sodalite, the next with turquoise, and a 1914 book files turquoise under Taurus instead. So we're not picking one list and calling it official. We group the twelve signs by the four elements astrology already uses, then match on color and feel. That grouping is our styling call. Nothing more.

Fire signs
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Warm stones. Tiger eye catching late-afternoon light, Cherry Creek jasper, bronzite. If his taste runs bolder, pick a version with plated gold accents.

Earth signs
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Matte and grounded, nothing that shines. Matte onyx all but disappears into a black sweater sleeve. Kambaba and picture jasper for something with more texture.

Air signs
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Lighter stones with some movement in them, like labradorite, or a mixed-stone bracelet that refuses to commit to one color.

Water signs
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Blues and deep darks: sodalite, lapis lazuli, blue tiger eye. Snowflake obsidian is black with pale gray spots, a bit like the first minute of snow on asphalt.

Not sure which route to take? Zodiac only makes sense if he actually reads his horoscope. For a man who rolls his eyes at it, the birth month is safer, and "I know your birthday" lands better than "I know your sign" anyway. If you're stuck between two stones for reasons that have more to do with his personality than his chart, we've written about that separately.

Born in December? Keep his birthday separate from Christmas

A man with a late-December birthday has heard "this one's for both" more often than he'd like. A two-piece set gets around it. One bracelet on the 25th, the other on his birthday.

December also covers two signs, so check the date. Sagittarius runs until roughly the 21st and is a fire sign, which suggests tiger eye. From around the 22nd he's a Capricorn, an earth sign: matte onyx or jasper. Lapis lazuli works for either.

Before you order: size, stacking and care

Stone bead bracelets are elastic, which makes sizing forgiving, though not unlimited. Ours run generous, so if you're unsure, size down. The average man's wrist is roughly 17 to 18 cm, about 6.7 to 7.1 inches.

One stone bracelet looks fine on its own, next to a watch, or beside a leather piece. You don't have to build him a stack.

Natural stone holds up to daily wear. Dyed stones and long sun exposure are another matter, and worth reading up on before you buy.

Buying for more than one man, or working to a budget? The Christmas jewelry guide and the under-$50 stocking stuffer list cover the rest. Gift packaging can be added at checkout.

FAQ

What is a good birthstone gift for a man?
Something he'll wear daily, in his birthstone's color. For most men that means a stone bead bracelet rather than a ring with a faceted gem. If he was born in September or December, start with lapis lazuli or sodalite.
Can men wear birthstone jewelry?
Of course. Nothing in the tradition is limited to women. On a man, a matte stone bracelet or a single stone accent usually works better than a sparkling setting.
Is it better to choose by birthstone or by zodiac sign?
It depends on him more than on the stones. Birth month is the safer default, since it doesn't ask him to have an opinion on astrology. Choose by sign if he already follows it.
Do gemstone bead bracelets lose their color?
Natural, undyed stones don't, not in normal wear. Dyed beads can fade with sun and water over time. Which stones to watch is covered in our full answer.
