Rope, Box or Cuban Chain: Which Men's Chain Should You Give This Christmas?

You've settled on a chain. Good. It's one of the few things a man can wear without rethinking the rest of his wardrobe, and it sits under a crew-neck sweater as comfortably as it does with a plain T-shirt.

Choosing the type is harder. Rope, box and Cuban look nearly identical in a product thumbnail and completely different around a neck. Here's how to work out which one is his.

The short answer

Box chain if he doesn't wear jewelry yet. Rope chain if he already wears a watch or a bracelet and doesn't mind a bit of detail. The 5mm Cuban if he wants something people will actually notice.

And the 8mm Cuban? That's for the man who has already told you, one way or another, that subtle bores him.

Most men land somewhere in there. The rest of this piece is for the ones who don't.

Rope
twisted links, catches light, adds texture
Box

Rope chain: texture for the man who already wears something

Give a rope chain to a man who already wears something: a watch, a ring, a stainless steel bracelet. He's used to a bit of detail on him, so this won't feel like a costume.

The links are twisted around one another, and up close the whole thing looks like braided cord made in metal. Nothing on it is flat. Under an open collar that shows up as movement more than shine, which is how it manages more character than a plain link without being any wider.

Ours is the Helix, a thin twisted rope in 316L stainless steel with a brushed finish, adjustable from 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches). It comes in plain steel, black PVD and 18K gold PVD, and you'll find all three with the rope chain necklaces.

Fine twisted chains kink if they get balled up in a pocket or a drawer. Hang it, or lay it flat.

As for the man who wants his jewelry to disappear: skip it. Thin as it is, a rope chain still looks decorative.

Box chain: the safe choice that doesn't look like one

For a first necklace, this is the one. A man who has never worn jewelry rarely wants to start with something that asks to be looked at, and from a few feet away a box chain barely registers as links at all. You see a clean line, close to the neck.

Wear it with a T-shirt and the outfit looks finished rather than accessorized. Under a shirt and blazer it shows at the open collar and competes with nothing. (Our piece on jewelry for a man who never wears jewelry makes the same argument at greater length.)

Up close the links are small squares joined at the edges, which matters for one practical reason. Pendants. A bail has an even surface to slide along, so if a pendant might follow later (or arrives in the same box), this is the chain to build on.

Cuban chain: presence, in two widths

Tell most people a man is wearing "a chain" and this is roughly what they picture. Cuban belongs to the curb family: oval links that interlock and are twisted so they lie flat against the chest. It's the heaviest-looking of the three by some distance. We make it in 5mm and 8mm, brushed 316L stainless steel, in silver or black. Cuban chain necklaces

Width is the part gift buyers underestimate. Three millimeters doesn't sound like much on a product page, but around a neck it's the first thing you see. 5mm gets noticed and still stays easy to wear every day, with a crew neck or under an open shirt. 8mm is a statement. On a slim frame it can look like the chain is wearing him; on a broader build it looks exactly right.

Not sure which he is? Go 5mm. Nobody grows out of the narrower one, and the wider one is harder to grow into.

Wear it alone. The link is the design, and a pendant mostly gets in its way, on the 8mm especially.

For a man who'd rather have it on his wrist, the same link comes as a Cuban link bracelet in steel or 18K gold plated, sized S, M and L. It's with the men's chain bracelets.

Match the chain to the man

Set aside which chain you like. These are the situations that usually decide it.

He doesn't wear jewelry yet
Thin box chain in silver. Low commitment, and very hard to get wrong.
He wears a watch every day
Rope chain, matched to the watch. Steel watch, steel chain. Gold-toned watch, the 18K gold PVD version.
He dresses mostly in black
Black box chain, or the 5mm Cuban in black. Black PVD blends into dark knits instead of fighting them.
He likes to be noticed
8mm Cuban. Don't overthink it.
He already has a pendant on a cheap chain
A box chain as the replacement. He keeps the pendant, and the chain finally deserves it.

Gold is where the options narrow. Rope and box both come in 18K gold PVD. The Cuban necklace doesn't, although the Cuban bracelet does. All our gold plated necklaces are in one place if you want to compare them.

Buying a chain without him finding out

Sizing is the worst part of buying jewelry for someone else, and chains make it far easier than rings do. The rope and box chains adjust from 50 to 60 cm, which covers roughly collarbone length to a little below it. You don't need his neck measurement. You don't need to ask a suspicious question over dinner either. Our guide to wearing a necklace as a man goes through where each length lands.

Cuban necklaces adjust as well. The bracelet doesn't. It comes in fixed sizes, so check the size chart, or borrow a bracelet he already owns and measure it lying flat.

All three chains are 316L stainless steel, and that's the part he'll appreciate more in February than on Christmas morning. No polishing. He can wear it every day, through workouts and showers. And if he asks whether it'll turn his skin green, our post on whether stainless steel jewelry can rust or turn skin green gives the honest answer.

FAQ

What is the best rope chain for men?

Thin. The twist already gives a rope chain plenty to look at, and extra width mostly adds weight. Ours is the Helix rope chain, in steel, black or gold, adjustable from 50 to 60 cm.

Is a Cuban chain a good gift?

It is if he likes being noticed. If jewelry is still new to him, start with a box chain.

What size Cuban chain should I get?

5mm, nearly always. Go 8mm only if you know he wants a statement and has the build for it.

Can you put a pendant on a box chain?

Easily. Of the three chains it suits a pendant best, since the chain stays quiet and the pendant gets the attention. A rope chain can carry one as well. On a Cuban, leave it off.

Rope chain or box chain for everyday wear?

Durability won't decide it, since both hold up to daily wear in 316L steel. What decides it is how much he wants the chain to show. For a man who wears much the same work clothes all week, box is the easier fit. Rope suits the one who wants a bit of texture at the collar.

Do stainless steel chains tarnish?

316L stainless steel resists tarnish, and it doesn't need the regular polishing sterling silver does. The black and gold versions are a slightly different story: that color is a PVD coating over the steel, and how it ages depends on how he wears it. A rinse and a soft cloth now and then is enough care. (If he plans to keep it on in the shower, our post on showering with a stainless steel bracelet covers that.)

What length chain should I buy for a man?

Somewhere between 50 and 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) works for most men, roughly from the collarbone to the top of the chest. Our rope and box chains adjust across that whole range, so you're not really choosing a length at all. The necklace length guide shows where each one sits.
